All ready to start by the second week of August, it is said to be visited by 200, 000 people on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, where they show their support to the most well-known historic festivals of Edinburgh. Officially began in 1950, with only eight events on the programme list, the tradition of the tattoo has its very roots in the seventeenth century. It was a simple ritual known as the ' Doe den tap toe' (or simply 'tap toe') in those days. But in recent years, it has become an enormous international event that showcases global talent and the best in Scottish. With over 30 countries represented in the tattoo so far, it is estimated that almost 30 per cent is from Scotland, with another 35 from UK and remaining from outside UK and others, those that are watching the TV broadcast of the show worldwide.
